Jersey First Joins the Fight for New Jerseyans on Tax Freedom Day

SHORT HILLS, NJ, May 3, 2018 –“People are leaving New Jersey in droves. Businesses are closing. Yet, the Governor has more taxes on the way. It is time to draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. That is why today, on Tax Freedom Day, I am announcing the creation of Jersey First, a non-profit organization that will identify and advocate for new and fiscally sound policy solutions,” said Rosemary Becchi, Founder and President of Jersey First.

Jersey First chose Tax Freedom Day to make this announcement as an example of why the organization is so desperately needed in New Jersey. The Tax Foundation measures Tax Freedom Day as the point in the year that taxpayers must work to cover their combined federal, state, and local tax bills. Most states reached Tax Freedom Day on April 19th, but in New Jersey it does not come until May 3rd this year because we are taxed so heavily.

“The fact that New Jersey residents have to work from January 1st until May 3rd–123 days–just to cover their share of taxes is simply unacceptable. Trenton and Washington need to get their hands out of our pockets and stop robbing us of our-earned money. It’s time to put Jersey First so families and businesses can stay and thrive in New Jersey,” said Becchi.

Governor Murphy is proposing record spending, and to pay for it, he wants to impose $1.7 billion in new taxes, including sales tax, tax on Uber and Airbnb, and a Millionaire’s Tax. “We can do better. We can do much better. Let’s take the shackles off of New Jersey families, businesses, and our economy and get to work in implementing policies that will lower our taxes and create new and good paying jobs. Let’s make New Jersey the beacon of opportunity we all know it can and should be.” Becchi said.

Jersey First was created as a 501(c)4 non-profit organization for the express purpose of standing up for all New Jerseyans who work hard and play by the rules but have had enough of bad economic decisions and high taxes. For way too long, inaction and in some instances, just bad economic policies have raised taxes and made New Jersey simply unaffordable to live and raise a family and has driven businesses out of New Jersey.

Our goal is to identify, educate, and advocate for policies specific to New Jersey that will both engage New Jersey residents in a transparent and detailed discussion on potential solutions to key issues as well as allow for targeted political activities that will benefit candidates who support making New Jersey affordable to live and work in again.
